Michel "Butch" Bouchard (center), and Danny McVicar (right), continued
consistently into the night placing sixth and fourth on legs 11 and 12.
(Steve Bailey of leg 8 is on the left) |
Next up were the "graveyard crew" of Bill Duncan, Brian Newlove, and Andy
Pierce. Andy finished fifth on leg 13 and Bill came in 4th on leg 14 and
we moved up from third to second in the team standings. |
We were up in time to see Brian Newlove finish up with a solid third
place performance on leg 15. The same member of the "Maine-iacs" who had
outlasted Joyce Switzer on leg one just edged out Brian for second. The
Maine-iacs in third place for the team competition only gained a few seconds
on us. |

Kevin Hynes from Boston (2nd behind me on leg 4) had an array of costumes.
He ran the final leg as "Mr. America" waving two American flags as he crossed
the finish line. |
|
Lynne Bermel, former Canadian Forces Athlete of the Year, set a course
record for women and placed 2nd overall on leg 16. Lynne has completed
15 Ironman competitions, including a win for the New Zealand Ironman. In
1992 she placed fifth in the world military cross-country championships
held in Nigeria. |
Steve Bujold ran the anchor leg for us finishing 7th. Steve is primarily
a triathlete and running is his weakest area, behind swimming and biking.
The following week Steve went to compete in the world military triathalon
championships. |

Andy Pierce and Mark Cunningham were the leaders who made this whole
effort possible. They planned and organized the trip and recruited
the athletes. |
